Welcome to the Menominee County Historical Society Digital Walking Tour. Menominee, Michigan — like its sister city Marinette, Wisconsin — is just one thread in a rich tapestry of local history. This tapestry is woven from the lives of immigrants, inventors, and industries such as paper mills, lumber drives, and fur trading. It also honors the long-standing presence of the Menominee Indian Tribe and the ancient Old Copper Culture that dates back thousands of years.
Today, you’ll embark on an exciting walking tour through our charming historic downtown waterfront district, nestled along the shores of beautiful Lake Michigan. The original version of this tour had been thoughtfully compiled in 2008 courtesy of members of the Michael J. Anuta Research Center as a physical booklet that could be taken around town to learn about some of our city’s history. These booklets can still be purchased at the Spies Public Library.
While we don’t attempt to cover every detail of architecture and history, our goal is to paint a vivid picture of what this area looked like during its early development.
Please enjoy the journey.
Special thanks go to those who made the digital version of this tour possible.
Mike Kaufman, Director of the Menominee County Historical Society, provided valuable historic information.
