Acerca del museo

The National Archaeological Museum “Antiquarium Turritano” was built in the 70s and was inaugurated in 1984. The museum houses archaeological finds from the excavations of the Roman city of “Turris Libisonis” and its territory.

In the beginning, the museum consisted of a municipal archaeological collection, put together by Mr. Emilio Paglietti between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and it included finds dating from the Bronze Age to the 5th century AD, mostly from the territory of Porto Torres but also from other locations.

Over time, finds from modern excavations, were added to the collection, objects for which a suitable home could be found in the archaeological and ethnographic museum “G.A. Sanna” in Sassari, as well as some material from thematic exhibitions, which later became permanent exhibits.

In 2021, the exhibition itinerary was updated with the introduction of a new museum story, where the main character is obviously the colony, and with a new section dedicated to the territory and its history during pre-Roman times.
