Come and explore the 10th Island of the Azores, or Florianópolis, through 53 attractions that show the influence of Azorean colonization.
Being the majority of the population, Azorean immigrants and their descendants were a powerful cultural force in the region, establishing ways of life, customs and traditions which would profoundly influence the people of Santa Catarina Island and its neighbouring regions. On January 6, 1748, 461 people from the Azores Archipelago landed on the island of Santa Catarina. These were the first of 6,000 Azoreans and Madeirans to emigrate to what was known as the Island of Desterro before 1756.
In 2018, we celebrated 270 years since the first arrival of Azoreans in Santa Catarina. Their cultural influence, especially in Florianópolis, can be seen in our daily lives in several areas.
We inherit religion, with the Festivities of the Divine, the saints, processions, and terminology. We get myths with witches and werewolves and a rich popular literature in oral form (proverbs, cantigas.) or in written form, with satires and the “pão-por-Deus” - amorous quartets written on paper cutouts in the forms of hearts or other shapes; dances (fandangos, the “ratoeira”); we inherited the distillery, the mill, the ox cart and the whaleboat; a varied craftsmanship, architectural influences, not to mention the local language, characterized by its "sung sound" and rapid way of speaking.
These attractions are grouped as follows: those numbered 1 to 10 deal with architecture; attractions numbered 11 to 22 refer to mills, fishing ranches and whaling stations; those numbered 23 to 33 show the Ciclo de Festas do Divino, Nosso Senhor dos Passos and Spirituality; attractions from 34 to 43 deal with folklore and popular culture. Finally, items numbered 44 to 53 relate to lace, crafts and gastronomy.
This audioguide is composed of text and audio in three languages - Portuguese, English and Spanish – and includes images illustrating the attractions.Have a great trip! Enjoy the culture, history and architecture of the island!
