Ever wondered what's happening beneath your feet as you stroll through the city? We've installed two transparent manhole covers to give you a rare glimpse into the hidden world of pipes and infrastructure that handle the water we borrow from Lake Mjøsa. In celebration of Hias' 50th anniversary, we invite you to a unique experience where you can explore this hidden underground life.

Manhole covers are portals that act like windows down to an extensive network of pipes. This network carries fresh and clean water from Mjøsa into our homes. Then, the used water is transported back to Hias' treatment facility. There, the water undergoes an important cleaning process before it's returned to Mjøsa, secured for further life and use.

This project marks a celebration of the important, yet often invisible work that ensures our daily well-being—and our natural resources. We aim to highlight the importance of our sustainable borrowing of water—a vital resource that governs our lives and our society.

You'll find these manhole covers in Hamar, Stange, Løten, and Ringsaker. This installation is inspired by artist Roald Andersen and civil engineer PhD Gunnar Ridderström, known for similar projects in Kristiansand, Porsgrunn, and Skien.
