Welcome to Arlon. Let me take you on a journey through this charming city, rich in history and culture. We’ll explore its picturesque streets, Roman remains, and impressive buildings.

Arlon, one of the oldest cities in Belgium, has a rich history that dates back to Roman times when the city was known as Orolaunum. It was an important administrative and military center in the Roman province of Germania Inferior. Its strategic location on the route between Reims and Trier made Arlon a crucial hub.

During this period, Arlon flourished with its baths, forum, and temples. The remains, such as the ruins of the baths, bear witness to the city’s prosperity. In the Archaeological Museum, you can admire numerous unique artifacts from this era.

After the fall of the Roman Empire, Arlon became a coveted place for rulers. It was fortified with a comital castle and grew into an important center in the Duchy of Luxembourg during the Middle Ages. The city experienced invasions, wars, and changing rule by Spain, France, and Austria. In 1839, after the partition of Luxembourg, Arlon became Belgian.

Today, Arlon is the capital of the province of Luxembourg. The city is known for its architectural heritage, the Thursday market, and cultural festivals. Despite modern developments, Arlon has managed to retain its historic charm, particularly through its Roman and medieval remains.

Arlon is a place where past and present harmoniously meet, offering a fascinating glimpse into the history of the region.
