Musée Old Western Art “Eng. Dumitru Furnica – Minovici” Museum of the Romanian

The house-museum was specially designed to exhibit the art treasures of a lifetime collector, Dumitru Furnica – Minovici, an engineer by profession. A class “A” historical monument, made a donation to the Romanian Academy in 1945, the edifice is built in Tudor style showing Normand insertions. It sharply reflects the visions of its founder and its architect, Enzo Canella (who drafted more that 400 versions of the project before he reached the final design we can admire today), where objects and the architecture go hand in hand. The craftsmen employed came all from abroad, from Italy, Austria and Germany.

Standing proof to the owner’s travels in Western Europe, the elements making the building rise to the level of art. The whole ensemble is thus lent harmony and elegance and forms an undivided collection in point of its structure. A careful eye and hand for detail emerge all over the place: in the joints of the ceiling wooden beams, the artful reconstruction of the larger objects as well as the transportation and mounting of the stained glass windows, well preserved to this day. 

The collection (900 pieces in all) consists in medieval and modern weaponry, stained glass, tapestry and pieces of furniture, works of European painters and rare books.
