Welcome! The Art and Archeology Museum of the Maremma, where you are now, was born in 1860. In that year, a particularly open-minded and culturally visionary priest, Giovanni Chelli, had the idea of giving a library and a museum to the city of Grosseto. From the outset, he insisted that the two institutions be public ones, and he succeeded in 1865, when the Comune of Grosseto accepted the donation. From that point, until 1975, the Museum was called Civic, before changing its name to the current one.

The museum you are about to visit is legacy to what had formerly been the first Museo, renovated in content and given a complete makeover in 1999. It is, however, in constant renewal, thanks to the regular flow of incoming results from the latest research, that need to be displayed to the general public.
