Old Rennes is the medieval and Renaissance district of the city, centered around Place Sainte-Anne, Place du Champ-Jacquet, and cobbled streets such as Rue du Chapitre and Rue Saint-Sauveur.
This area is famous for its colorful half-timbered houses, some dating back to the 15th century, with typical overhanging upper floors and carved wooden beams. These houses bear witness to the great fire of 1720 and the subsequent reconstruction, blending medieval architecture with 18th-century classicism.

Old Rennes is also home to major historic landmarks, including Saint Peter’s Cathedral, the Parliament of Brittany, City Hall Square, and Saint George’s Palace. Squares like Place des Lices and Place Sainte-Anne have maintained their social role: markets, cultural events, and meeting points for locals.
