Audio tour Exposition "Wonderful World of ice"

We continue the trip, and now in front of you there are the mysterious lands, on the shores of which the sea is covered with ice, where amazing animals live, where ice-bound open spaces shine under the sun. For a long time, brave travelers sought to get here. Overcoming incredible difficulties, they discovered the cold regions and plotted them on the map. Thanks to them we can make our excursion into the cold Arctic.

The Arctic is the north pole of the planet. In fact, it is partially covered with ice of Arctic Ocean, surrounded by land. There is tundra, swamps, and rich fauna, which was formed under the influence of permafrost. In summer, the sun here does not descend beyond the horizon for months. And in the winter, for several months in succession, there reigns the deep polar night, which is illuminated only by the colorful northern lights.

The Antarctic is located on the opposite South Pole of the planet – it is a complex of glaciers, islands, shelves surrounding the continent of Antarctica. It is 99 percent ice-covered, and only colonies of seabirds fly here for breeding.

In the Antarctic, mountains and blocks of clear ice are formed, which is an invaluable source of fresh water. Icebergs have various shapes and heights: from two to forty meters, but among them there are giants exceeding 500 meters. On the surface of the ocean, only one-fifth of such a giant floating block is visible, and most of it is hidden under water.

At both poles of the planet live marine mammals, birds, fish. But in these cold ecosystems, the food chain starts from the small crustacean – krill.

People came to the Arctic only for the last four hundred years. Only relatively small scientific colonies came in Antarctica, but it is impossible to call this land inhabited yet. The first people reached its shores only 200 years ago for study and research.
