Dmitri Mendeleev Museum and Archives was created in December 1911 (4 years later Mendeleev’s death) at the initiative of Russian scientists. At present, it is the world's largest centre for storing and exhibiting materials related to the life and work of the Russian scientist and polymath, professor of Saint-Petersburg University, corresponding member of the Imperial Saint-Petersburg Academy of Sciences Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleev (1834-1907). The exhibition is situated in the Twelve Collegia Building, in the University-owned apartment where professor Mendeleev and his family had been living during the period from 1866 to 1890. It was here that he formulated the Periodic Law, wrote "Principals of Chemistry", and produced plenty of researches papers on key questions that included the physics of gases, physical chemistry of liquids and solutions, economics and the oil industry. In early august 1890, Mendeleev left the University and moved out of the apartment. Since then it has never been used for a private accommodation.
