音频游览 Andrey Nikolayevich Beketov — the “father” of Russian botanists

Andrey Nikolayevich Beketov (1825–1902) was an outstanding scientist, a prominent Russian botanist, famous pedagogue and lecturer, popular science communicator, public figure and an honorable member of Saint Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1895).

Beketov's contribution to the science cannot be overestimated. With good reason, Beketov is called the “father” of Russian botanists, the founder of St. Petersburg botanical school.

We have timed this exhibition to coincide with the birthday of Andrey Beketov, who turned 195 on November 26 (December 8), 2020.

The exhibition was arranged on the basis of the materials held at the Museum of History of St Petersburg University, the University Herbarium as well as the following publications:

1) The journal «Vestnik of Saint Petersburg University. Series 3. Biology. To the 190th anniversary of the Botany department of Saint Petersburg (Leningrad) State University» 

2) The article «‘The Garden must be open’: difficult choices for the St Petersburg University Botanical Garden»
