Expressionism in Russian Art is the next in a series of monographic exhibitions of the Russian Museum (Russian Symbolism, Impressionism in Russia, Russian Neoclassicism) dedicated to the most prominent trends in early 20th century Russian art.

The multi-faceted phenomenon of Expressionism has for the first time become the subject of dedicated monographic exhibition. The exhibition will highlight the specifically Russian features of this trend and its development at different stages. The exhibition is compiled from the wealth of paintings, drawings, engravings, and sculptures held by the Russian Museum.

The exhibition presents about 350 paintings from the 1900s to the mid-1930s that reflect the spiritual quest of Russian artists at several turning points in the history of the country. Along with canvases by Natalia Goncharova, Mikhail Larionov, Wassily Kandinsky, Marc Chagall, and Pavel Filonov that are considered to be among the best works of Expressionist art, lesser known paintings by their colleagues from art associations such as Union of Youth, Donkey's Tail, Knave of Diamonds, The Easel Painters’ Society, Circle, and others are presented for the first time.
