On the Field of Mars in St. Petersburg from June 9 to August 9 inclusive, a historical exhibition project “Thirty paintings from the life of Peter the Great - 2022” with images of significant events in the biography of Peter I. The project is dedicated to the 350th anniversary of the birth of the first Russian emperor and is a reconstruction of the exposition that took place in St. Petersburg 150 years ago. Free admission
The last grandiose celebration of the anniversary of Peter I in Russia took place in 1872 at the initiative of Alexander II. The king-liberator and reformer felt a special connection and similarity with the great ancestor and organized a large-scale celebration as part of the two hundredth anniversary of his birth. One of the key events was a public exhibition on the Field of Mars (Tsaritsyn Meadow). Thirty huge canvases depicted the main deeds of the king-transformer in chronological order. The paintings were installed in pavilions stylized as peasant huts and accompanied by explanatory inscriptions. The exhibition was an incredible success.
The initiative to reconstruct the exhibition “30 Paintings from the Life of Peter the Great” in the year of the 350th anniversary of Peter the Great belongs to PJSC Gazprom and Alexey Miller personally. To implement the project, the Peterhof State Museum-Reserve, the State Russian Museum and the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts named after Ilya Repin joined forces.
The fate of the remaining sixteen canvases is unknown, so the honorable mission to fill in the gaps and write modern works on scenes from the life of Peter, once approved by Emperor Alexander II, was entrusted to professors, graduates and students of the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts.
The architectural appearance of the pavilions in which the canvases will be exhibited was recreated according to the surviving sketches and engravings and is as close as possible to the historical original.
In October 2018, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree on the celebration in 2022 of the 350th anniversary of the birth of the Russian Emperor Peter I. It is planned that St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region will become the center of the anniversary celebrations. Anniversary events are also planned in Voronezh, Astrakhan, Yekaterinburg, Arkhangelsk, Yaroslavl and other Russian cities.
