The town stands on a hill 169 meters above sea level. The history of the town is linked to that of the Benedictine monastery of Terra Maggiore, called in documents "Monasterium Terrae Maioris", and to the medieval city of Castel Fiorentino. Fiorentino went down in history because it welcomed the emperor Federico II, who died in his domus in December 1250. For five different centuries, the town was a fiefdom of the noble de Sangro family, princes of San Severo and dukes of Torremaggiore.
