On either side of the town, we can clearly see the two imposing rocks of Peyremale and Saint-Julien.
The first inhabitants settled on top of the Saint-Julien hill, which offers a natural defensive position. The Romans also built a castrum there.
In the Middle Ages, the town grew constantly. The lords of Anduze had holdings in many of the region's seigneuries, and were among the most powerful in Languedoc.
In the 16th century, the town was at the heart of the religious clashes between Catholics and Protestants. It was in Anduze that the Duke of Rohan, leader of the Protestant party, established his headquarters in 1628. Today, the whole town is marked by these religious events.
