Museo Kodumbalur Heritage Site

Kodumbalur is an ancient place located in Pudukkottai district. The place is located almost equidistant, about forty two kilometers from the district headquarters of Pudukkottai and forty three kilometers from the city of Trichy which happens to be the nearest airport.

The earliest Tamil epic, ‘Silapathikaram’ mentions, Kodumbalur as a strategically important place located between the Chola capital of Uraiyur and the Pandya capital of Madurai. Another major work, the ‘Periyapuranam’ calls it as the principal city of Konadu. The place was ruled by Irukkuvels, who were the subordinates of Cholas and had blood connections with them.

The place also is noted for its many important inscriptions belonging to the period of Pallavas, Cholas, Pandyas and Irukkuvel chieftains. The inscriptions can be found in Tamil, Kannada and Sanskrit languages.
