Audioguía Territory and landscape

Territory and landscape.

The territory of Calvene is mainly mountainous and hilly, interrupted by a flat strip at the bottom of the valley, along the course of the Astico River, in the hamlets of Maglio, Pralonghi, Bissoli and, in part, Magan.

The ridge that runs from west to east, from Cima Fonti to Monte Mazze, separated two important hydrographic basins: to the north, the basin of the Galpach stream, to the south the basin of the Astico River. The southern slant slopes down from Cima Fonti to form an amphitheater, closed to the southeast by Monte Cavalletto, 1252 meters high. The mountain in Calvene is also characterized by fissures and crevasses, which require a certain caution to be practiced.

Cima Fonti, with its 1519 meters of altitude, is the most panoramic point of the town: on clear days one can admire the Adamello Goup, the Carnic Alps, the Dolomites of the Trentino and of the Cadore.

In addition to that, the natural terraces of Monte di Calvene and Prà del Giglio offer spectacular 180° views over the valley of the Po River, towards the sloped of the Lessinia Mountains of Vicenza and the Venetian Pre-Alps.

At the valley floor of Calvene, at a certain point on its hydrographic right, the Astico, becomes wild with rather steep banks and very dense vegetation on the sides.

Among the Bregonze hills, which close Calvene to the south, the maximum height of 450 meters is reached at Pian di Marola.

The flora is typical of the hill and of the mountain scenarios: green areas dotted with colchicum and dandelions, heather cushions, meadows with daisies and daffodils. The lily is the flower symbol of territory. In the upper altitudes, gentians, wild carnations and cyclamen appear. The underbrush consists of ferns, lichens and, naturally, of mushrooms and small berries.

The show of the nature in Calvene is a multi-color film that renews at each change of season.

The fauna in the mountain of Calvene includes hoofed mammals, like roe deer and mouflon. In the woods, it is possible to meet hares, foxes, badgers, stone martens, squirrels, dormouses.

Among the bird fauna, one can still hope to meet the capercaillie and the black grouse.

The climate, mild in the part facing south and cooler and more rigid in the mountain area, where the snow still falls in winter, offers the traveler countless opportunities to do sports, even the extreme ones, to practice various outdoor activities, or to relax in nature, in a still little country, densely inhabited and not congested by tourist flows.
