These families settled in the area, and set up farms in the rural landscape. The families that inhabited this social setting comprised what locals refer to as "Old Jacksonville." During hard economic times in the early 1900's, however, many farmers were forced to sell their land. As a result, much of this once-farmland was developed into suburban homes, stores, and chain restaurants. Individuals that maintain "Old Jacksonville" heritage refer to this transformed landscape as "New Jacksonville."
