Audioguía Marine engines

Thanks to the variety of its finds, the naval engine section offers visitors the opportunity to observe a synthesis of the evolutionary path of marine engines, from steam engines to modern two-stroke diesel engines still in use in large ships.

The first nucleus of the Museum's collection of naval engines was established starting in 2016, bringing together some finds already in possession of the University for several decades on the basis of this intended use. Other engines, the result of donations from some private citizens, were then progressively added to them.

In 2020, thanks to the acquisition of a group of 10 finds of high historical and collectible importance, including the engine of the 1909 "Medusa" submarine, the collection of naval engines was further expanded, with a consequent overall renewal of the related area exhibition.

The most important finds in this collection are those produced by FIAT Grandi Motori, from the beginning of the 1900s to 1970. Today they represent evidence of the vast and prolific production of what was, not only in Italy, one of the largest ship engine manufacturers.
