Audioguía Archaeology Section - Intro

The “Palazzo della Cultura”, a fine building of neo-rationalist architecture, is located in the heart of the city of Avellino, in the place once occupied by the botanical garden of the bourbon era.

Inaugurated on 19 December 1966, it houses the archaeological section for a total area of about 2000 square meters spread over the entire ground floor.

The section in addition to the Zigarelli Collection houses, the founding nucleus of the museum, and also includes the finds of the most significant archaeological excavation campaigns carried out in Irpinia during the twentieth century, thus offering a vast and rich documentation on the various phases of settlement from Prehistory to the Late Roman age.

The layout follows a historical-chronological criterion and is arranged in eight exhibition halls which develop themselves around a small central courtyard.
