The name of this town is inevitably associated with the battle of 1214 which federated for the first time the kingdom of France as a "nation". In these times of feudalism, the vassals of the King of France, the Counts of Boulogne and Flanders saw with an evil eye the growing authority of King Philip Augustus.

In alliance with the English Plantagenets and the German Emperor, the two "felons" believed in a certain victory. On July 27, 1214, the two armies met at the edge of the Bouvines bridge on the Mark and at first sight, the allies had the advantage of the number and the geography because installed on a height.

The courage and tenacity of Philippe Auguste's knights helped reverse the situation and routed or captured the main leaders of the rebellion. One keeps in memory, the popular saying of the peasants seeing passing, Fernand of Portugal, the count of Flanders captured: "Four well-ironed ferriers, train a Fernand enferrés".
