In 1358, a knight called Diederic Loef of Horne built a castle in the middle of the Dutch countryside where the Meuse and Waal rivers converged.

At the time, this was a perfect location for levying tolls. Today, it’s the ideal spot for a day out with friends, family or colleagues. You can also use our castle as a venue for your parties or conventions, or even as a place to spend the night.

Loevestein Castle’s rich history spans some 650 years. Roughly speaking, you can split its history into three main periods that we refer to as The Middle Ages, The State Prison and The Hollandic Water Line periods. The most prominent period in the castle’s history is undoubtedly the State Prison period.

Loevestein became notorious worldwide as the place in which the world-famous legal scholar, Hugo Grotius (Dutch: Hugo de Groot), was imprisoned and from which he subsequently escaped

    Mooie interessante tour. De expositie van het Humanistisch Verbond zet tot nadenken, kunnen we veel van opsteken.

    Veel te doen leuke gids, mooi kasteel

    het is mooi alleen het is een beetje saai. voor kinderen is er heel weinig de doen. ze konden maar een ding doen dat ze heel leuk vonden. ook kreeg je een sleutel. dat leek eerst heel leuk, maar als je die gebruikte was het een voor hun saai filmpje of verhaal. ook kregen ze allemaal een sleutel, en dan ruziën om wie hem steeds mocht gebruiken.
