Tour audio 7. Apothecary garden

Collection No. 7. The Apothecary Garden, it was created in the courtyard of the museum building. You remember that the house originally belonged to a coachmaker and, accordingly, there was a coach yard here. Today, you can see about 100 medicinal plants in the Apothecary Garden. It is worth mentioning that herbs and medicinal plants brought to Europe from Asian countries were expensive and available only to the richest part of society. This was the reason for the first attempts to grow them locally. At first, monks began growing herbs in monastery gardens. where they grew roots and fruits, as well as medicinal plants and herbs that also had medicinal properties. Monastery gardens later became apothecary gardens. In parallel with monastic medicine and pharmacy, secular medicine was also developing in Europe and apothecary gardens appeared at pharmacies.
