À propos du musée

Tangible history and symbol of unyielding resistance, Casemates at Kornwerderzand. The only place in Europe where German advances were stopped in May 1940.

The Kazematten Museum tells the story of 225 Dutch soldiers, who managed to stop 17,000 well-trained and armed German soldiers. A story of unyielding resistance, courage and clever tactics. The location, the collection  of stories and images, sounds and documents, make a visit to the Kazematten Museum a unique experience.

Kornwerderzand is a former construction island on the Afsluitdijk, near the Frisian coast. The casemates were built between 1931 and 1936, as an additional defense for the Fortress of Holland. The Afsluitdijk as a direct link between the north of the Netherlands and the Fortress of Holland had to be secured. In addition, the protection of the locks at Kornwerderzand and Den Oever were of crucial importance for the Dutch water defence line.
