The palace and garden complex was built in 1799-1803 by request of Hetman Kyrylo Rozumovskyi and designed by architect Charles Cameron.
The complex consisted of a central three-story palace with a basement, two service and guest outbuildings located on both sides of the palace and connected to it by an openwork wrought-iron fence, and a regular linden park.
After Hetman's death, the palace and garden complex became the property of his son Andrii, an outstanding diplomat and patron. After the death of Andrii Rozumovskyi, the palace and garden complex passed into state ownership in the middle of the XIX century.
By the middle of the XX century, the park and both outbuildings were lost. The palace has been preserved till the present.
In 1911-1913, the first reconstruction of the palace took place. World War I prevented it from being completed. During World War II, the facades and architectural and decorative elements of the monument were significantly damaged. In the second half of the XX century, several attempts were made to restore the palace, which supported its condition. However, none of the restorations was completed.
The palace of Hetman Kyrylo Rozumovskyi was restored in 2003-2008 under the aegis of Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko and with the charitable contributions of Ukrainian patrons. Two service and guest outbuildings were rebuilt and the park was recreated.
On August 22, 2009, the Museum of the National Historical and Cultural Reserve “Hetman's Capital” was opened in the Hetman's Palace.
