Agrigento, founded by Greek colonists under the name Akragas in the sixth century before Christ, stands as one of the historical gems of Sicily and the Mediterranean. Its wealth and power in the ancient world were such that the famous poet Pindar called it "the most beautiful among those inhabited by mortals," a title that continues to be justified today.
Agrigento was one of the most flourishing colonies of Magna Graecia, with over two hundred thousand inhabitants in the classical period. Its extraordinary development was interrupted by the political and social changes that swept over the island, with the arrival of the Romans and later the Arabs, Normans, and Spaniards.
