À propos du musée

Ammersoyen Castle is one of the best-preserved medieval castles in the Netherlands. The fortified water castle is strategically situated between the Meuse and Waal rivers in the beautiful river region of the Bommelerwaard. The castle is one of the castles owned by Geldersch Landschap & Kasteelen that is open to the public.

Around 1325, the robust Ammersoyen fortress was built on Gelderland’s side of the Meuse. It was most likely commissioned by the Herlaer family. One of the castle’s notable features is that it was basically designed as a single structure. The castle’s footprint is more or less square with a heavy tower at each corner and residential wings overlooking the courtyard. With its thick walls and towers it was perfectly defendable but, for its time and age, also remarkably comfortable as a residence.

Through the centuries the castle survived sieges, fires, shelling, and reconstruction and renewal. It was inhabited, abandoned, rented out, and served unusual purposes in its time as a monastery, washing machine factory, and town hall. In 1957, Geldersche Kasteelen acquired the heavily damaged castle. Its doors were opened to the public in 1976 following a renovation that took up all of sixteen years. The castle’s interior features a special portrait collection, an armory in which you can try on parts of armor, and an exhibit on 600 years of residential history using archaeological objects, and more.

Ammersoyen Castle also welcomes you for business gatherings, weddings, parties, children’s parties, concerts, and lectures. For more detailed information about our activity and event program, please visit www.glk.nl/ammersoyen
