Woking Palace was the site of a Tudor residence with origins dating back to 13th century. Little survives at the site itself, but this circular walk and audio guide shares what we know about this important site. Using the latest research, reconstructions, and results from a series of excavations, this guide by Surrey County Archaeological Unit (SCAU) will shed light on life in Old Woking and Woking Palace 500 years ago.

This 2.5 mile circular loop will take you around Woking Palace and the surrounding area, starting and finishing at Manor Way Car Park in Old Woking.

SCAU would like to thank to The Friends of Woking Palace and Woking Borough Council for their support on the Woking Palace and its Park project.

Things to know about this walk:

We advise that you download this guide before starting the walk as there is limited phone signal at the site.

The walk begins at Manor Way Car Park in Old Woking. Car parking is free and the address of the car park is Manor Way, Old Woking, Woking GU22 9JX

We advise you use headphones for this walk to improve the sound quality, but ensure you take these out when crossing the road.

This walk is just over 2 miles long and lasts around 1hour 15mins.

The walk is a mixture of road, track and footpath with uneven ground and other trip hazards. It includes a stile. Please take care.

Don't forget to turn your phone volume up when you start the walk!

You are responsible for you own safety throughout this walk. During the winter and after rain the second half of the walk can be very wet.

A brilliant audio tour! Very easy to use and so informative, with music and pictures bringing the palace ruins to life. Highly recommend!

Lovely and informative walk around one of my favourite "hidden" historical sites. Using the app is brilliant and so straightforward. Did the walk on a very hot sunny day but there were still a couple of squidgy spots. Not a shorts walk as a lot of the footpaths from the palace back into Old Woking are quite overgrown. There's also a interesting crossing of a stream just before the cemetery, pretty dry in July but might be tricky if it's been quite wet.

a lovely surprise to hear music and see examples in pictures. walk itself is excellent and very enjoyable in fine weather or only light rain - if you are fit & able. style and stream crossing on branches as others had mentioned was ok for us but anyone with pushchairs, small kids or anyone not entirely stable, would have to turn back or re-route somehow.

Nice walk, although the section after the palace itself is best tackled after a spell of dry weather. There are still deer in the area if you are lucky enough to see them. Good guide and easy to follow.

The audio tour made it easy to follow the route and the commentary and pictures were excellent. The music was a nice surprise! Our first visit to the site of Woking Palace so we learnt a lot. As noted by others, a section of the path back was waterlogged so a few detours were necessary.

In winter or when wet DO NOT go past the style at point 11 if you have small children or elderly walkers as its too muddy and boggy just to a return once you’ve seen the Willow Withies. Not listed on the map there are streams which can only be crossed using broken branches - our 1h trip took 3hrs! The audio guide and photos on the Palace are informative and make it much more interesting.

Really interesting walk. Glad we had wellies as it was very muddy and wet in places. Lots of fun! Even got to see a swan on the Wey (not guaranteed :) ) Would recommend.

The last time we visited the palace was when the most recent dig had just taken place. It was nice to revisit with some good information. Glad we had waterproof footwear as Wey was extremely high!

We really enjoyed the walk and learning about Woking's history and the Palace. Thankfully we had our wellies and baby carrier as the site was very muddy.

Very interesting. Wellies could be useful as there was a lot of mud and lying water.
