Welcome to the Osborne Homestead Museum in Derby, Connecticut! The State of Connecticut’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection has owned and operated the museum since 1983. It was originally a farmhouse built by the Smith Family around 1840. In 1870 John White Osborne and his wife Susan Durand bought the farmhouse for their son Wilbur and his wife Ellen. Wilbur and Ellen had four children, but the youngest Frances was the only one to survive into adulthood. The Osborne Family owned manufacturing businesses that made hoop skirts, hat wires, corset wires, and other small metal goods. As the family became more prosperous, the simple farmhouse expanded. Of what you will see today during your tour – almost all of the furniture and antiques belonged to the Osbornes.
