Audio tour 07 A Weaver from Kringa

In Istria weaving was professionally practiced by men. Given that amongst the Slavs, weaving was done by women, and mainly for the needs of the family, the influence should be sought in Central European tradition. This claim is also supported by the fact that a horizontal loom was used in Istria, known as a “krosna”. Krosna is the common Slavic name for a loom, which was maintained in Istria. It differs in size and appearance from other looms of this type in Croatia and is more similar to the so-called Friulian type. It is almost certain that the emergence of professional or semi-professional weavers in Istria was influenced by their immigration from the Carnia and Friuli regions in Italy where numerous textile manufacturers had developed since the 15th century.
