Welcome to The Cradle of Humankind, a fascinating journey back to our origins
Get ready to go back nearly 4 million years and take a tour of the geology and ecology of the Great Rift Valley with over two hundred pieces– tools and fossils – unearthed since 2006 on the Olduvai and Laetoli sites in Tanzania.
A never-before-seen display of original fossils and lithics from the National Museum of Tanzania (Dar es Salaam) and excavations by The Olduvai Paleonthropology and Paleoecology Project (TOPPP), showing you the 4 major groups of hominids in our history!
UNIT 1 – AUSTRALOPITHECINES
The discovery of Lucy, the first Australopithecus Afarensis, and the footprints found at Laetoli (Tanzania), showed that by 3.6 million years ago hominids were already fully bipedal.
UNIT 2 –HOMO HABILIS
The first stone tools appear in the evolutionary record about 2.6 million years ago.
UNIT 3 –HOMO ERECTUS/ERGASTER
The earliest remains of Homo Erectus, the first hominid to adopt a high-quality diet of meat and who used the hand axe as a main tool, date back 1.8 million years.
UNIT 4 –HOMO SAPIENS
The brain evolved and 200,000 years ago archaic Homo Sapiens appeared, hominids with a morphology similar to our own.
