There's not much distance to cover because our Chinatown was pretty small. In the old, old days. We had several Chinatowns that sprung up along Wolf Creek. This one lasted the longest. The Gold Miners Inn basically sits right on top of what was the heart of our Chinese community.
I hate to start out a tour with parking, but it can be a problem. So in the picture section of this introduction to the tour, I'm including a map with three possible places to park. I would also like to note that the Gold Miners Inn doesn't want people who are not staying there to park in their parking spaces.
You can tell this because of the cameras mounted on the light poles. I'm fairly sure it's okay to walk around their building and through the parking lot as that's what we'll be doing for this tour. But be aware you'll be photographed while you're doing it.
The three possibilities for parking.
#1. The parking spaces off of Bank Street where you'd park to go to the UPS store.
#2. Along the right side of Tinloy Street. To access this one-way zone, drive on Bank Street going towards the freeway and turn right on Tinloy Street.
#3. The Grass Valley City government parking lot on South Auburn and Main Streets. There are also bathrooms available to the public in this building, and if you go downstairs, there's a nice display to look at about the Grass Valley Chinatown. Now a little bit about your tour hosts and some pre tour prep.
My name is Rose Murphy, and I'm a biographer for the Grass Valley Museum. I am Lisa Redfern. I'm on the board of Sierra College Press. Rose and I were both members of the Nevada County Historical Society and historical fiction authors.
Before starting all of our tours, we recommend downloading it at home first or in a place with good internet. In the Sierra Nevada mountains, Wi-Fi can be hit or miss. With the tour downloaded, you won't miss a thing.
All of our walking tours, our geo-fenced. This means your phone with GPS maps and satellites can track your movements when your IZI Tour app is open. When you walk inside that zone, it should trigger the audio to start playing automatically.
Just leave the app open and walk the tour and just listen. And then if you want to pause it or at that stop, look at the pictures. You can do that or you can read along in the transcript. Each tour stop contains an audio file, a transcript, and pictures. Click on the title of the stop. Each stop will have a few photos to view.
As you begin this journey. We want to ensure an enjoyable experience for you and fellow walking tourists. Please remember to use earbuds for your audio tour and avoid using speakers.
On the final tour stop. Check out the PDF that provides links to resources, articles, books, videos, and more.If you are ready, let's go!
