Over het museum

The open-air museum «Etarkharikurt», which means the «Settlement on the Light Shore» or «Light Village» in Khanty language, is a stylized traditional camp of the indigenous Khanty people.

The ethnographic complex was opened in 2013. It includes a winter earthen house, a traditional choom dwelling, household and sacred sheds, and much more.

Nowadays the «Etarkharikurt» settlement is one of the sights of Nyagan town, a favorite place of recreation for many town residents, and also the main venue of the traditional Ob-Ugrian holiday «Fisherman's Day».

In 2019, the staff of the Museum and Cultural Center launched a new family recreation project «Living Ethnography». The project does not only show the life and traditions of the Central Ob Khanty, it also allows you to plunge into their culture. Adults can experience the role of hunters and fishermen, shoot a bow, compete in physical agility and strength. In traditional triangular dwellings, the children will be told Khanty legends and fairy tales, learn to make a traditional rag doll «Akan». The Khanty ladies, dressed in traditional costumes, will teach everyone the basic movements of their national dance. The project «Living Ethnography» unites people of different nationalities who come to the «Etarkharikurt» settlement.
