Associated with the communes of Saint-Aubin-sur-Algot, Grandouet and Saint-Pair-du-Mont, this chief town of canton brings together 1200 inhabitants.
The first writings of Cambremer date back to 690. Although located 15 km from Lisieux, Cambremer belonged to the feudal exemption of Bayeux. The nearby Bois de Bayeux preserves the toponymy ...
Great names and great stories, let us remember that of Louis XVI, returning from a visit of the port of Cherbourg in 1786. Soliciting the peasant who followed his coach to resume his song with an encouraging "encore", the king s' drew a thunderous "bis" when he threw a few gold coins to the clever Norman ! It is impossible not to mention Proust, who, often staying in Cabourg, came to visit his friend Swann in Cantepie and who gave the name of "Cambremer" to a family in "In Search of Lost Time". Finally, there are the more recent visits of Presidents Valéry Giscard d'Estaing in 1977 and Jacques Chirac in 2002.
The village of Cambremer is characterized by its eclectic buildings, timber-framed buildings, brick, stone, or with essentage (wall covered with small slate tiles or wood to protect it from the weather), most of which date from XIXth century. Despite some changes, the village has retained its character since the early twentieth century. However, if it was in 1940 a very active "agricultural village", it did not preserve the 4 hairdressers, 5 grocery stores, 13 coffees ... Even the competition of cattle of the agricultural Comice died in the early 1980s. Cambremer, however, retains the necessary services for its population and the reception of secondary residents and many tourists.
Known as the capital of cider in Pays d'Auge with its famous "Cru de Cambremer", elaborated by the producers of the Route du Cidre, Cambremer is a gastronomic stage that welcomes every 1st weekend of May the AOC- PDO.
