Museu National Archive of Grosseto

The National Archive of Grosseto is responsible for acquiring, conserving and enhancing the archival heritage of the pre-unification offices and of the Italian State, within the Province.

It also preserves archives and individual documents that have become state property, archives of local public bodies, and private archives.

The historical heritage of the National Archive of Grosseto consists of about 50,000 units, with documents ranging from 1500 to the mid-twentieth century. The oldest archival material is found in the Estimo, Ancient Judicial Magistrature collections, and in the archives of the Municipalities.

The documents can be consulted in the appropriate room, by means of inventories and lists.

The Institute was born as a section of the National Archive of Siena in 1958, establishing its temporary headquarters in a building owned by the Province of Grosseto.

In 1963 the Archive acquired legal autonomy and, due to the continuous increases in the archival heritage, the premises proved to be inadequate. Thus began the search for a new location. In 1980, a listed state building was assigned to the Archive, located in the historic city center, in Piazza Ettore Socci, where it still stands today.
