After the dissolution of Kyivan Rus, the Ukrainian lands became part of neighboring states – the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, then – the Grand Duchy of Moscow. As a result of Moscovia's war with the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, Chernihiv-Sivershchyna came under the influence of Poland.
The Polish King Sigismund III contributed to the construction of the Baturyn Fortress in 1625, which was built to protect the Polish-Moscow border. Unique archaeological findings give an idea of what this fortress was like. The establishment of royal power and the spread of European traditions in administration, military affairs, construction, and production had a positive impact on the further development of the city.
But Ukrainians sought to have their independent state. This prompted Baturyn residents to support Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytskyi. In 1648, Baturyn became part of the Cossack state – the Zaporizhian Host.
Interesting archaeological findings of the Baturyn Museum of Archeology represent the life of Ukrainian Cossacks. These are items of their weapons, ammunition, and marching military life. In Baturyn of the XVII century, as in other European cities of that time, many craftsmen lived. The Museum of Archeology represents the life of the inhabitants of Baturyn by demonstrating household items such as dishes and decorations to stove tiles.
