Nîmes, a city in Occitania, a region in the south of France, was an important outpost during the Roman Empire. Created more than 2,000 years ago around a deified spring that would later be called Nemausus (located in today's Gardens of the Fountain), Nîmes was one of the most important colonies in the Roman world. Crossed by the Via Domitia, the road that linked Rome to Spain, it was already located at a commercial and cultural crossroads of great importance. It is known for its well-preserved monuments. With more than 154,000 inhabitants and an area of 16,150 hectares, Nîmes is the 18th largest city in France. The Roman monuments, by their majesty and their exceptional conservation, contribute greatly to the identity of Nîmes. Built 2,000 years ago, the Maison Carrée, the arenas, the castellum aquae and the remains of the Roman walls are the pride of the people of Nîmes, and rightly so. The maintenance and long-term development of this incredible heritage is one of the priorities of the current city project. The facades of the Maison Carrée have been entirely restored. The restoration of the arenas, a very large-scale operation, is underway. The city of Nîmes has been awarded the Ville d'Art et d'Histoire label. Make way for a visit!
