О музее

The Kampong Ayer Cultural and Tourism Gallery is in Kampong Lurong Sikuna. The origin of the village name is derived from the English word schooner, a name for a type of sailing ship. The name indicated that this was where ships were anchored in the old days.

The site where the gallery is used to be where the Lela Menchanai Malay School was located. It was the first school in Kampong Ayer built by the government in the 1950s. It was officially opened in April 1953 by the late Sultan Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien III. Unfortunately, the school burnt down in 2000.

The gallery was officially opened on the 19th of August 2009 by the Crown Prince of Brunei Darussalam, His Royal Highness Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah. Like most buildings in Kampong Ayer, the gallery was constructed over the river. It was built to conserve Kampong Ayer’s cultural heritage, showcasing in historical sequence, archaeological finds, and other daily objects that the residents used around the 10th to 20th Centuries.

The gallery is divided into two sections: The Multipurpose Hall and Galleries. The multipurpose hall displays handicrafts and products by Village Consultative Councils and local artisans. Further inside, the space is divided into five galleries.

Each gallery displays different periods of time:

1.     The first gallery consists of objects used from the 10th to 14th Century, stories of earliest mentions of Kampong Ayer, merchandise from Chinese trades, outfit accessories and more.

2.     The second gallery showcases objects used between the periods of the 14th Century to the 16th Century, which also contains coins used during trade.

3.     The third gallery consists of objects that were used between the 19th to 20th Centuries. It includes some smithed blades and a shield. Information on the development of Kampong Ayer can be found here.

4.     The fourth gallery is Kampong Ayer Contemporary with the addition of Economic Development. It showcases objects used in the residents’ daily lives in the past ranging from kitchenware to tools used for keeping up with personal appearances.

5.     Gallery 5 continues with Kampong Ayer Contemporary with the addition of Social Development. Objects used for the purpose of entertainment are displayed here.

A sunken floor in the middle is for demonstrations on how to play the local traditional games on display. You’re welcome to ask for assistance from one of the gallery staff to experience the games.
