The history of Athens begins nearly 3,000 years ago when the first Greeks founded a small society atop the rock of the Acropolis. However, it took many centuries for Athens to reach its zenith, during the 5th century b.C., under the reign of Pericles who brought Athens into its "golden age": it was the pinnacle of civilization, culture and knowledge. Philosophers, artists and men of culture from all over the world gathered in Athens, attracted by its prestige and reputation. The Athenians were very proud of their origin, in contrast to the rest of the Greek population, which had migrated to the peninsula.

According to the myths, the name of the city originated as follows: Athena, goddess of wisdom, and Poseidon, god of the sea, competed for dominion over the city. They decided to settle the dispute with a race. Each would demonstrate their powers and who was best suited to generate the city. Poseidon struck a cliff with his trident and water gushed out of it, but his water was salty, so it wasn't of much use to the Athenians. Athena struck the earth and made an olive tree blossom and bear fruit, promising abundant crops, timber and goods, and she was named the winner and patroness of the city. This is why Athena is often depicted with an olive branch.
Athens experienced many glories and defeats, rose and fell, was conquered and sacked, until it was renamed the capital of Greece in the mid-19th century, after the Greek Revolution against the Ottoman Empire and nearly 400 years of Ottoman rule.
