Om museet

Welcome to this audio tour of Allegories of the Senses, an exhibition on display at the Cooper Gallery Barnsley from 15 August to 21 November. The artworks in this exhibition were chosen by our guest curators – who are all members of Action for Autism and Asperger’s Barnsley. They chose works from the Arts Council Collection and from the Fine and Decorative Arts collections of the Cooper Gallery and Barnsley Museums.
An allegory is a story or artwork with a hidden meaning. Artists often try to evoke the senses in their work – to represent sound, taste or texture through paint on canvas. When this become the main theme of the work it is often titled ‘The Allegory of the Senses’
Each artwork in this exhibition was chosen to represent one the senses: sight, smell, touch, taste or hearing, so that the exhibition itself is an Allegory of the Senses.
This tour includes brief descriptions of each artwork which may be particularly useful for blind and partially sighted visitors.
The script for this tour was written by Sarah Evans, a Masters student at Leeds Arts University, and it is read by Sarah, the guest curators and Barnsley Museums staff.
