This tour will take you past the Brouwersdam, which was once built to defend our inland territory against flooding. But these days, the dam is also a superb recreational spot, where nature and recreation go hand in hand. You can take the tour either by car or bicycle and start at any section of the route.

It was something of a challenge to construct the Brouwersdam. The reason for that was that the dam had to bridge the entire expanse of water between Goeree-Overflakkee and Schouwen-Duiveland, which was no less than 6.5 km long! This passage is also referred to as the Brouwershavense Gat; hence the name Brouwersdam. The dam made up part of a more comprehensive plan incorporating various other dams. Therefore, when the construction of the Grevelingendam was being built, enough useful expertise had been amassed. The dam took nine years to complete, from 1962 until the end of 1971. The dam was very much needed though, in order to prevent another flood disaster such as the one in 1953.
