The maritime exhibition at the District Museum offers a clear overview of the development of fishing and boatbuilding in Þingeyjarsýsla — from the age of rowboats to the era of motorized vessels. It gives special attention to Húsavík’s skilled boatbuilders and the vital role the sea played in shaping settlement in the region.
Many boats are on display, the largest being Hrafn, a five-oared Norwegian vessel gifted to Húsavík in 1974 to mark the 1100th anniversary of Iceland’s settlement.
You’ll also see a wide range of gear, tools, and equipment used in fishing, seal and shark hunting, seabird harvesting, fish processing, and boatbuilding.
