From lost sounds, through the smells of a sewage scandal, to a timber-framed mansion with orchards, this walk along the Ashton Canal and its surroundings will encourage you to linger a little in a part of town people tend to pass through. We hope it will make you appreciate the rich layers of history that have shaped Holt Town.

Excellent 'tour'. As an exiled Mancunian now living in Hampshire I was very pleased to find this. I knew the area somewhat in the 1960/70s. How nice to see the redevelopment of this historic area. I've been back recently.....but must walk all this route in its entirety some time.

Absolutely fascinating especially for someone living in the area. Well done! If you wish to delve deeper into the visual aspect of this tour then, you can check out the historical photo collections at the Manchester Central Library (available online I believe). We used them to source some "as was" photos to go with some "as is" ones where we live by the Ashton Canal. Should just mention that there are some great coffee shops in the Ancoats area if you need refreshments on your tour.
