collaboration with the experts of Sciacca’s widespread Museum of the 5 Senses will take
you through the streets of a neighbourhood, a village of Sciacca where treasures of
inestimable value are preserved.
The urban fabric of Sciacca is spread over three levels. the seaside village of Sciacca,
constituted by the sailors; neigh bourhood and the port; the central part, represented by the
district where the noble families once resided and later the artisans' workshops. And
finally, the upper village, from which we start our tour, mainly inhabited by farmers still
today.
Starting from “Torre Campanaria” (Bell Tower), which offers from high above a
breathtaking sight of the city, we go up to one of Sciacca’s religious sites, “Chiesa di San
Michele Arcangelo”, where part of the Holy Thorns of Jesus Christ’s Crown are preserved,
we continue knowing one of Sciacca’s most important families, the Peraltas, and
discovering one of the identity delicacies of Sciacca, the “ova murina”, realised by the
sisters of the monastery “Badia Grande”, “Bata Ranni” in Sicilian. Before exiting Gerardo
Noceto Square we are going to find out why at the entrance of a church, “Chiesa del
Giglio”, there are 4 cannonballs walled. Going through the old walls that defended the city,
the “Mura di Vega”, we arrive at Lunas of Aragon’s Castle, the theatre of a bloody story
that involved another powerful family of Sciacca, the Perollos. Then, arriving at
“Giummare”’s monastery we tell you the amazing story of the benefactor father, Don
Michele Arena, and of Giummarello, the little donkey helping him do good to all the people
who needed it. Finally, we reach “Chiesa di Sant’Agostino”, the church where the
“Madonna del Soccorso” statue was originally kept, the Virgin Mary, to whom Sciacca is
particularly bonded.Translated by Francesco Ferrara
