Its history melds with that of the great abbey founded by Itta of Aquitaine, wife of Pippin of Landen, and whose first abbess was St Gertrude, great-great aunt of Charlemagne.
The Collegiate Church of St Gertrude today is one of the most important Romanesque churches in Europe and is still the beating heart of the town, though not the only trace of its prestigious past.
