The occupiers, under Gauleiter Gustav Simon, pursued two goals: the Germanisation of the population, as well as the destruction of the Luxembourgish state. Another goal of the Nazis was the suppression of the Jews.
Resistance movements were established to fight the nazi regime. Their actions were largely defined by patriotic propaganda and public information measures, economic boycotts and public support for political resisters and resistance fighters. The Nazis replied with strong crackdowns, as well as raids, torture, deportations, and executions.
