Experience an entertaining tour through the 1000-year history of the Hanseatic town of Korbach.
In the year 1414, on the day before Ascension Day, 16 May, the citizens of Korbach have reason to celebrate a special festival: after decades of work, the town fortifications have finally been completed!
After the unification of the old and new towns in 1377, it was decided to secure both towns, which were already surrounded by their own wall, with a second, common wall. This is how the double ring of walls came into being. Between the walls were ramparts and ditches. The inner wall was defended from a battlement, the outer wall by still existing embrasures. Numerous towers, some of which have been preserved to this day, served as defensive bastions for the fortified citizens. Five gates were used to enter or leave the city.
The double ring of walls, together with the two Gothic churches, the stone warehouses of the Hanseatic merchants with their characteristic stepped gables and the historic town hall from 1377 with a Roland figure, are among the best-preserved testimonies to the medieval town. The interactive city history tour "Between the Walls", on the other hand, is completely modern. Here the name says it all: the 2.1 km long circular walk leads between the two medieval city walls once around the historic old town.
The start is right next to the bronze town model at the Wolfgang-Bonhage-MUSEUM KORBACH. At 10 stops, visitors learn interesting and curious facts about the town's history and get to know the many modern facets of Korbach. If a break is needed in between, numerous cafés and restaurants in the old town invite you to linger.
For each station on the circular route, you will find additional information, fairy tales and legends from the town's history and - only in the original app - a riddle question to answer. If all the questions have been answered correctly, there will be a little surprise at the tourist information office.
Enjoy puzzling along and discovering our beautiful city!
