EVOLVING HARMONY
There is no blueprint to shape our society in a more sustainably way. And because of the global entanglement between people, animals, plants and objects, the task is extremely complex. We live together. With everything and everyone we share origins, circumstances and climatic future. The primary concern must be to move beyond the parasitic Anthropocene. The way we live together, produce and consume must be radically different. But how? Where to start?
From an investigative attitude, Kazerne intertwines hope and the power of design. Through the responsible use of local raw materials, mono-materials, residual flows and recycling, we challenge everyone to cause as little damage as possible to nature, with attention to complex kinship structures, ancient crafts and indigenous wisdom, as well as to parallel perspectives and pace. In our opinion, experiments are allowed to fail. Because also that can induce movement. By only pursuing perfection we risk frustrating ourselves, which may lead to unnecessary standstill.
At the same time, we take a critical standpoint. Only we, humans, can choose to exclude poison and fossil raw materials. With respect for everyone's struggle – we struggle with it ourselves – we call for more radical choices, beyond linear and mono-thinking and acting. Stop making flimsy assumptions and indulge in greenwashing in favor of personal expression or economic gain. Even when we take a more humble position in our lives, equating ourselves with all other organisms, we can continue to create and consume. Nature is our ally. Where people, nature and design come together in harmony, we find the hope and inspiration to pick up the pace to address the challenges of our time. With heart and head.

The transformation from a parasitic into a sustainable society is extremely complex. In the exhibition Evolving Harmony, Kazerne connects hope and the power of design in the challenge of causing as little damage as possible. With an emphasis on responsible use of raw materials, attention is paid to the entanglement of everything and everyone, ancient crafts, parallel perspectives and pace. From a critical standpoint, also towards ourselves, we recognize the struggle in excluding poisons and fossil fuels, but we also argue for more radical choices. Away from linear and mono-thinking and acting. As even when we take a more humble position, with nature as an ally, we can continue to create and consume. Harmony between people and nature offers hope and inspiration to pick up pace to address the challenges of our time. With heart and head.
Perhaps more than ever, art and design have the task of connecting and proposing alternative scenarios. Through the work of Svenja Bremen, Rollo Bryant, Jeffrey Cats and Bo Vesseur (Jo Studio), Converse Architects, Laura Dieckwisch, Miles Le Gras, Petra Janssen (Studio Boot), Esther Jongsma & Sam van Gurp (VanTot), Fenna van der Klei, Kyran Knauf, Nanette de Kool, Ekaterina & Valery Kuznetsov (Decorkuznetsov studio), Sun Lee, Mikki Mann (FE studio), Ori Orisun Merhav, Isaac Monté, Grietje Schepers, Selyn Textiles, Giulia Toneguzzo, Vaderland, Pepe Triginer Valenti, Venusian Kitchen, Bo Vesseur, Weeef by EE Lables, Lucas Zito & Marwane Soumer (Studio Récré) and more Kazerne calls for participation from various perspectives and specialisms to work together to create hopeful examples.
