音频游览 Hall 5 – Ukrainian art of the 17th century

The 17th century marked a new period in the history of Ukrainian sacral fine art, which displayed a distinct orientation toward the West European artistic culture of the Renaissance. Changes in the artistic culture began to echo social and historical developments, the rise of the national liberation struggle, and the struggles for Ukrainian statehood. Cities became centers of trade and crafts, education developed, and the role of the fraternities as national religious organizations gained prominence. As a result of changes in the worldview and the growth of humanism, the views on religious art began to change.   Moving away from the conventions of artistic language of the previous period, the master iconographers sought to embody the moral and aesthetic ideal of a new era.

Lviv became the leading cultural center of Ukraine of that time.
