The Ottoman Empire, created by Turkish tribes in Anatolia (Asia Minor), grew to be one of the most powerful states in the world during the 15th and 16th centuries. The Ottoman period spanned more than 600 years.  They were the central powers in World War I (1914–18) who sided with Germany. Postwar treaties dissolved the empire in 1922.

-The capture of Constantinople by the Ottomans caused many scholars to flee to Italy and bring with them knowledge that helped spark the Renaissance.
